Offroad racing is rarely just about what happens on the track. It’s a test of preparation, resilience, and the sheer grit of the team behind the rig. Last weekend, our crew loaded up for Ultra 4 Australia Round Two, and if the trip taught us anything, it’s that the battle to reach the starting line is often just as brutal as the race itself.

The Road to the Race

We’d spent the last few months head down at the Carbon Offroad shop throwing extensive upgrades at the buggy, including rear trailing arm bracing and a complete brake overhaul. We thought we were ready.

Then the week of the event hit. Between welcoming our new GM, Rhys, and a classic case of motorsport timing, everything went sideways. Our truck’s starter motor completely died while we were hauling the buggy, leaving us stranded in a drive-through. Carbon Emily had to winch the van off the back of the truck and take that to the event in the Gladiator and then Rhys came to the rescue with a car trailer and we offloaded the buggy in the carpark and towed back to the office to hook up to the mighty Touareg. We scrambled hard, arriving just in time to miss the prologue, but getting back into the driver’s seat with my navigator, Terry North, made the chaos worth it.

Massive thanks to the legends at Profix Automotive Upper Coomera for turning around a starter motor replacement on the truck and getting us back on the road by the following Monday afternoon!

The Heat of Competition

Starting from the back of the grid, I was determined to push. The track was completely unfamiliar, but that only added to the adrenaline.

Carving through the field, early on we hit a gully at speed. The "easy line" was jammed with traffic, so I gambled on the high side. Bad move. We didn't spot the massive, tank-trap-style v-notch until it was too late. We buried the throttle, but the impact was brutal. We kept moving, but the damage was done: a bent front bulkhead and a severely stressed front diff after a lower control arm rear bolt walked its way out and left us limping to the pits.

The Real Victory: Pit Lane Heroics

The reality of racing isn't the highlight reel. It’s the hours spent covered in grease in the pits while your crew works tirelessly to keep a dream alive. While I was feeling sorry for myself, the crew was breathing life back into a broken machine.

Watching Jake, Aaron, and young Angus tear down the front end, cut out bent bolts, and solve complex mechanical issues on the fly was incredible. Before the event, Brent put in tireless fabrication work, while Darren and Campbell logged long hours to make sure we could line up again. These guys put massive hours into a buggy project that sits alongside their regular workload at Carbon. Seeing them step up, take on job roles outside their comfort zone, and refuse to throw in the towel is the exact culture we build on.

We managed to get back out for the long course, dialing it back to a 50% pace to preserve the rig. Unfortunately, a cooling issue crept up, which we found was simply a couple of blown fuses, but following that a catastrophic failure of the front diff mounts coming out of a spicey creek exit finally forced us to retire.

Recovery in this sport isn't just mechanical; it’s personal. A huge shout-out to Jono from Outdoor Explorer, who hooked up his Land Rover wrecker to drag us safely back to camp. That kind of camaraderie on the track is what makes the off-road scene what it is.

Why We Really Go Racing

Retiring early is a tough pill to swallow, but it reminds us why we do this. We don't race just for silverware; we race for the community. Off-road racing in Australia is building something rare: an inclusive, family-friendly environment where kids, partners, and grandparents feel at home. Seeing three generations of the North family competing together is proof of why this sport matters.

As naming rights sponsors for Ultra 4, Carbon Offroad isn't just putting a logo on a banner. We want to be in the dirt, engaged with the community, and supporting the growth of accessible racing across Australia.

We’re already setting our sights on Round Three in Stanthorpe In October. We’re heading there with one clear goal: retribution. We want to run every single stage with a clean, competitive buggy.
